Wenatchee River – Kayaking (Duckie)Mid to Late Summer
Leavenworth/Icicle Creek to Peshastin Flats, Class II - III
6 miles - 5 hours, Mid July through later August
We run the Wenatchee River from spring until late summer and conditions differ between the early time period and the latter. Later in the season, after spring melt-off of the snow-pack in the Cascade Mountains, we Kayak (Duckie) the Wenatchee River at moderate easy going water volumes. At this time of the season we change the portion of the river to a different stretch from the icicle valley above Leavenworth to our meet site in the Peshastin Flats below Leavenworth. This time of the season we run the Class 2 or 3 rapids and the waves are more tame and the weather is generally quite hot so wet, splashy Duckie trips are easily just about the most refreshing activity you can do! Mother Nature is unpredictable so the exact dates when we arrive at the moderate water flows safest for Duckies are not known until we decide we are there, but generally we experience the lower flows from early/mid July until late August. For each person who decides to kayak we provide a single person, inflatable, commercial quality Kayak (K1) which are very stable but much smaller than rafts which seat 8 paddlers & the guide. We also include the BBQ, shuttle, wetsuit, life-jacket, helmet and paddle. When paddling the small watercraft such as the K1s even the small waves look huge from the seat of your Kayak. Kayaking is an excellent alternative to whitewater rafting and an introduction to unstable whitewater hard-shell kayaking without the need to have learned the “Eskimo roll” if you go upside down. We provide a Duckie escort service in which guides in Duckies escort your group of Duckie paddlers and provide instruction and guidance before the trip and safety support during your trip as well. A superb choice for thrill seekers who want to get very wet and experience the thrill of rapids on their own and seated right down in the river! We run the Duckies with our moderate water raft trips so if you like your group can split up with some in a raft and others in Duckies - and all are doing the BBQ and shuttling together at the same time. You'll also enjoy up-close views of the jagged peaks of the sheer Cascade Mountains adjacent Leavenworth, shoot the rapids, then relax in your kayak while floating through the pines and firs and the scenic upper Wenatchee valley. The trip is typically sunny, with a mix of serenity and action. The Wenatchee River, no matter whether Rafted or Duckied, is a perfect trip for groups large and small, couples or an entire family and one that is certain to make you a whitewater advocate.
